5 Tips for Your Scuba Diving Refresher: How to Dive Back In with Confidence
Getting back into scuba diving after a long stint away can feel a bit daunting. Whether it has been a couple of months or a couple of years, it’s normal to have a few questions racing through your mind: “Will I remember how to set up my kit?” or “What if my buoyancy is all over the place?”
Trust me, I’ve been there! It took me an eye-watering 14 years to get back into the water. While I wasn't exactly terrified, I was definitely feeling the pressure and those inevitable "rusty" nerves before my refresher.
If you’re ready to get back into the swing of things, here are five tips to help you shake off the cobwebs and start diving again with total confidence.
1. Take the PADI ReActivate™ Course

As a PADI Professional, I always recommend this as the gold standard for returning divers. The PADI ReActivate program is more than just a quick dip in the ocean; it’s a specially designed "tune-up."
If you want an intensive refresher that helps you get back to basics and feel truly secure in your skills, this is the way to go. It’s the perfect bridge between your time away and your next big adventure.
2. Dust Off Your Old Materials

Every certified diver has a stack of manuals or digital materials from their original course. Before your refresher, "fish" those books back out!
Reading through your Open Water Manual and re-completing the knowledge reviews is a fantastic way to trigger your memory. You’ll find that the theory starts flowing back to you much faster than you’d expect once you see it in print again.
3. Lean on Your Instructor

Even if you’ve mastered the basics before, think of your refresher as a fresh chance to learn. Your instructor is there to be your guide and your sounding board.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions or discuss any specific concerns you have. A good instructor provides more than just a skills checklist; they provide the briefings and support that make you feel at home in the water again. (And trust me, they’ve seen it all, so no question is too small!)
4. Get Hands-On with the Equipment

Whether you’re using your own gear or hiring from a dive centre, take a few extra minutes to re-familiarise yourself with the setup.
It might take a moment to remember exactly where every hose goes and how to secure everything properly. Your instructor will be on hand to help—mine actually had me assemble and disassemble my kit several times until it felt like second nature. Thanks, Russell!
5. Take the Pressure Off

Arguably the most important tip: Don’t be too hard on yourself. It doesn’t matter that you’ve learned it all before; nobody is perfect the first time back.
Think of it like riding a bike. You might be a little wobbly when you first put your foot on the pedal, but the muscle memory is there. Diving is the same - you never truly forget. Relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy the process!
Which Refresher is Right for You?
